the woman behind the business

Art has always been in my life. As a child, I was constantly doodling and from there, my love for art grew and developed every day. It was all I wanted to do! Mamaw, my grandmother, was my first instructor and greatest supporter. I remember Mamaw giving me art assignments to bring back to her after a visit. Together we would walk through the work I completed and talk about different techniques of how to improve my art. I will forever be grateful for the lessons she taught me and the time spent with her developing my creative side which has become my career.

Continuing on the path my grandma started me on, I graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Studio Arts and an emphasis in illustration. College was where I gained a greater sense of artistic layout and honed my skills with creating realistic artwork which is the basis of illustration and the work I create today.

After college, I continued to learn more about the art world while teaching art at Serra Catholic School. I channeled the instructional love from my Mamaw and helped to educate students in the principles of art. As they say, teaching is one of the best ways to learn; and during my time there I learned more about art and was seeing how the art world was changing with less focus on tangible art.

As the art world became more digital, I switched to a position in the digital design department at a real estate corporation. While there I worked on marketing materials like flyers, email campaigns, presentations, and more. Again, I was adapting and putting my artistic knowledge to use for business.

Later, I married my supportive husband and we started our family. With the daily pushes and pulls of trying to balance work and home life, I knew I wanted to be more available to my family. I enjoyed working, but there was always a part of me craving to live out my creative side. Starting a design company and working from home made this possible! I began working small jobs for friends who’d ask for calligraphy work and gained clients by word of mouth.

I’ve been learning and growing my skills in the arts since I was able to crawl but have been selling my work since I was in high school. I've been professionally doing signed work since 2011 and have owned and operated my own business, Katie O'Brien Co., since 2016. Over the years I’ve built my skills to include work in many different mediums while building up my company.
